WyGISC Leverages Long Standing Relationship with ARCC to provide a Space for Hyper Screen Sharing to Campus and Beyond with SAGE3

Researchers at the School of Computing’s Wyoming Geographic Science Center (WyGISC) worked with colleagues at the Research and Economic Development’s Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC) to provide SAGE3. “We have partnered with ARCC on various other successful projects in the past to leverage their systems and expertise such as Pathfinder and Alcova, it just made sense to for us reach out to them on this one as well,” said Nicholas Case, a Geospatial Developer at WyGISC. SAGE3 (https://sage3.sagecommons.org/) is an open-source platform for collaboration similar to a jamboard but with much more features funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It also complements video meeting tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams and integrates Artificial Intelligence. More specifically, SAGE3 provides researchers and students alike with the ability to create collaboration boards that can then add several different applications and widgets for coding, visualizations, AI chat, and more for whatever project they are working on together.

The need for reliable hardware and support was a major hurdle for WyGISC. “I was able to get SAGE3 running on an instance in NSF’s Jetstream2 cloud system, but that was not a sustainable solution for us to be able to provide the application to all of Campus, “ said Case, “What ARCC provided was the best path forward with the virtual machine server and their system administrators working out the technical details, which really frees us up to work with the application and not worry about how things like the networking needed to reduce latency.” ARCC had to work with the SAGE3 developers to work through various bugs and inconsistencies to configure the system properly and set up an authentication method with CI Logon that enabled collaboration to groups outside of campus using their own credentials instead of needing a University of Wyoming account.

Researchers and students have already benefited from using ARCC and WyGISC’s implementation of SAGE3. “I have had to give tours of the Studio to potential students and employees for the last several weeks and are now working with the community colleges in the state to get working with SAGE3 that ARCC is running,” says Case about the Data-X Studio, “There is even a new studio going in, or is already in, at Central Wyoming College (CWC) in Riverton.” The Data-X Studio is an innovative multimedia space within the Science Initiative building that contains several video boards, cameras, microphones and a large touch screen that use SAGE3 as the platform to do presentations, hold meetings, teach classes, or whatever else users can think of. Beyond the Data-X Studio, ARCC’s SAGE3 implementation is available as a web application that anyone can try out on their own devices such as a laptop at https://sage3.arcc.uwyo.edu/

Collaborators collaborating on collaboration. “ARCC has really been a great partner for us on this project and will continue to work with them in the future. I don’t see this as a one-and-done scenario, where we ask for a product they deliver and then say ‘bye’.” Says Case, “We know that at WyGISC, if there is technical help needed, ARCC are usually the first people we call. Even if they can’t provide exactly what we need, they always provide alternative ideas.”
