Edgar Named WES Engineer of the Year
Febuary 11. 2010 -At their convention last week, the Wyoming Engineering Society (WES) honored Thomas
V. Edgar, associate professor in UW’s Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering,
as the WES Engineer of the Year. Edgar received his B.S. in civil engineering from
the University of Colorado in 1972; and M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Colorado
State University in 1975, and 1983 respectively. He is a registered Professional Engineer
in both Wyoming and Colorado. Serving as an associate professor at UW since 1989,
Edgar specializes in soil and water relationships, such as flow in porous media, groundwater
hydrology, design of dams, construction dewatering. He has conducted research in electrokinetic
remediation of soils, deformable and expansive soils, septic system leachate remediation
and wellhead protection of public water supplies.
Edgar has been a member of the Wyoming Engineering Society since 1986 and was named
an honorary member of WES in 2009. He was recognized for his work for the society
and for his representation of the college, recognition shared with fellow UW faculty
Ray Jacquot, professor emeritus and Dave Whitman, professor in the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering. He has been the spokesperson for the WES Resolutions Committee
for a number of years, the “semi-official” sergeant-at-arms for the business meeting
and is known for wandering around during that meeting to collect donations for the
scholarship fund, another committee he has been committed.
The Wyoming Engineering Society has been recognized by many national professional
society leaders as being unique in being able to bring engineers and surveyors together
for continuing education, professional recognition and fellowship. Because of the
University’s unique place in the state, it also acts as an annual reunion for college
alumni.
A member of ASEE, ASCE, and former recipient of the John P. Ellbogen Meritorious
Classroom Teaching Award and UW Excellence in AdvisingAward, Edgar also previously
received the Meretricious Achievement award for his contributions to the WES.
Congratulations to Thom Edgar on this well-deserved honor.
