It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure their application (for the correct term) is complete by the date listed (including reference letters). Applications not fully completed will not be reviewed.
Application Deadlines
We are no longer accepting applications to the CNSL PhD program.
Updated on October 24, 2024 - We will not be running a fall 2025 counseling doctoral cohort.
This doctoral program is on campus, in Laramie, a cohort program.
Admission Requirements
GRE
Domestic Students
GPA: 3.0
GRE: not required.
International Students
TOEFL: 80 minimum online score, 20 minimum score in each subset and the score must
be from within the last 2 years, OR IELTS: 6.5 minimum overall score with 6 minimum
in each subset.
GRE: 151 minimum verbal and 153 minimum quantitative.
Other requirements
Master of Arts or Master of Science Degree in Counseling
How to Apply
Step 1: Apply to UW and the School of Counseling, Leadership, Advocacy and Design through the online applicant portal.
Access the UW graduate applicant portal. Make sure to indicate you are applying for the fall semester.
After completing the initial information page, you will receive an email from the system including a link and your temporary username and password.
Please complete the contact, academic, residency information, etc.
Submit the application fee.
Submit ALL required documents to the online document portal (see below for details)
Agree to the admissions terms and submit your application.
Step 2: Transcripts
Upload copies of transcripts into your application.
Submit official transcripts from all colleges to:

Note: Please do not wait to have ALL colleges send official transcripts to Admissions.
It is University policy that the UW Admissions Office require official transcripts
from every college you have attended. This includes your undergraduate transcript, AND
all the colleges that you have transferred coursework from. This process can take
some time to request, send, receive, and process.
If you attended UW, you do not have to contact UW Admissions Office to send official
transcripts to UW. They will know to "pull' them when you are admitted.
Step 3: Personal Interview Day
Please plan to visit UW for a personal interview, usually occurring mid to end of February.
We intend to host an Interview Day on: TBA.
Applications are reviewed, and faculty members invite the qualified applicants to attend the required interview day in Laramie.
Required Documents
Please include ALL documents listed below for your application to be considered.
A letter of intent (five page maximum) describing:
Occupational and personal goals
Fit between your goals and the UW Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D. Program
A summary of your academic background
A current academic resume
Upload copies of transcripts (official transcripts should be sent to UW Admissions)
Current recommendation letters addressing leadership skills from three different referees (the portal will send a request to each of them after you enter their email addresses)
Recommendation Letters (3 required)
In the application portal, please enter in the contact information for the 3 people you would like to write recommendation letters on your behalf. The application portal will email them directly with directions on how they will upload their letter into your application.

*Please be sure your 3 people are aware you are applying to graduate school and give them heads up to expect the email with directions and inform them of the application deadline.
They will receive emails with instructions. They may need to check their spam, junk, or other folder for the UW email. If they cannot locate it, their email may be blocking ours, so please reach out to UW Admissions Office.
