How Excused Absences Are Managed
Faculty guidance on managing student absences is available in the Guidelines on Managing Student Absences and the Student Attendance Policy.
If an absence is approved:
- The student will receive a signed PDF letter via email.
- The letter serves as official documentation and must be shared with affected instructors.
- The letter will not include specific details about the reason for the absence.
- Instructors are expected to provide students a reasonable opportunity to make up missed coursework or activities, regardless of course format or modality.
Once approved, students must notify instructors:
- At least 24 hours in advance, when possible, or
- As soon as practicable after the absence, except in emergencies or during official university closures.

group absence requests
Faculty and staff requesting a group excused absence for official university activities or functions should submit the request at least one week in advance to allow adequate processing time.
