What is an Excused Absence

An excused absence is an absence approved under UW policy for specific, legitimate reasons that prevent a student from attending or participating in class. 

  • Students are responsible for regular attendance. 
  • Instructors define attendance expectations in the syllabus. 
  • An excused absence allows a reasonable time to make up missed work within the approved dates. 
  • DOS does not control grades, deadlines, or attendance penalties.

  • Excused absences must be between 3–5 consecutive weekdays for a single situation. 
  • This standard helps ensure absences are reserved for significant, short-term disruptions while keeping expectations consistent across courses. 

If your absence is fewer than 3 days: 

  • These situations are considered short-term and are handled directly with your instructor. 
  • Instructors use their syllabus and course policies to determine attendance and make-up work.

automatic excuses

Absences are automatically excused when the University is officially closed by the President. No excused absence request or documentation is required. 

Common examples include: 

  • Snow days or severe winter weather when UW cancels classes 
  • Natural disasters impacting campus operations 
  • Emergency closures affecting in-person or scheduled class activities 

Official closures are communicated through UW Alerts, the UW website, and official university messaging.
