Grasshoppers of Wyoming and the West

Entomology

Western Lubber Grasshopper

Bradynodes obesa

Bradynodes obesa

Bradynodes obesa, the mountain lubber, is found in the lower elevations in the Big Horns and Wind River Mountains and may occur in other suitable areas of northwestern Wyoming. It lives in localized populations at the transition area between the pine savannah and the sagebrush desert. Eggs overwinter and hatch very early in the spring. Adults are found in May and June and are gregarious. Their feeding habits are little known in Wyoming, but they may prefer grasses. Any damage to rangelands would be limited by its localized habitat and its occurrence early in the year. ref: Strohecker et al., 1968.
