Course Overview: This course will provide students an experiential learning experience in the field of natural resources and energy law and policy. Students will work individually or in groups on real-world legal and policy problems for various stakeholders. Possible clients include the Natural Resources Defense Council, the National Audubon Society, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Western Organization of Resource Councils, Wyoming Outdoor Council, Albany County, and the Wyoming Attorney General’s Office.
The class will meet once a week for 1 hour and 20 minutes in a seminar setting. Discussion during class time will include an overview of some of the key federal statutes and cases governing natural resource and energy law. During the course, students will draw on pertinent and practical legislative and administrative materials. While the focus will be on federal law, students will have the opportunity to explore the important roles state and local governments play in natural resource and energy law issues.
Class time will also be spent examining legal research techniques, internet resources, and advocacy tools useful in completing the assigned project work.
In addition to the weekly seminar, students will complete 150 hours outside of the class on experiential learning projects.
