UW Law Library Access and Services

The law library collection includes 206,120 treatises, microfiche, law reviews, federal and state statutes, administrative decisions, digests, looseleafs, citators, encyclopedias, reporters, and audio-visual resources.  It is open to the general public. A guide to locating materials in the library is available.

Any Wyoming resident may check out treatises.  Registering as a borrower is free and requires a form of picture ID.  Our circulating collection checks out for four weeks.   Renewals can be done over the telephone at (307)766-2210 or through the online catalog.

Computer access to the Internet is available throughout the library. Computers for students are available for word processing, email, and CALI exercises.  The student lounge houses an email bar for quick access from the classrooms.

Full access to Westlaw and Lexis is restricted to those users who have their own password.  Incoming students are all assigned passwords during the first few weeks of classes.  Westlaw Campus Research is available from our library for non-law school patrons from our reference computers.  For access, select the Databases link.

Student printers are available in the student lounge and in the PLC Computer lab.  Printing on these computers is charged to university student accounts.  Public patrons are asked to speak with a librarian for printing assistance.

**

Group study rooms seating approximately 6 people are available for use during library hours.  Reservation periods are two hours with the opportunity to extend if the room is available.  Study rooms may be reserved online at http://uwyo.edu/lawlib, or call (307)766-2210 for reservations.  More information about the study rooms in the Law Library is available here. Additional study spaces are available elsewhere on campus. See this guide for more information.

A Copy machine is available in the reference room.  It accepts nickels, dimes, and quarters.  Copies are $.10 each.

Photocopies, faxes, or electronic transmission of materials that are housed in our collection can be sent directly if a cite to the resource is provided.

Photocopy charges: $10.00 basic service charge + $.10 per page after 100 pages

Email charges: $5.00 basic service charge + $.10 per physical page after 100 pages

During periods of inclement weather, the law library may make determinations regarding open hours. Please call (307)766-2210 to verify that we are open if travel conditions appear questionable.

The law library will be closed when:

  • the university has declared an emergency closure;
  • the City of Laramie has issued a no travel advisory in town;
  • the law library administration determines it is in the best interest of the safety of its employees to close the library.

Decisions to open the library after morning closures will be reviewed midday.

**

Reference assistance is available weekdays from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. during regular school session.  To reach a reference librarian call (307) 766-2210 or email lawref@uwyo.edu.  The reference staff does not perform extensive legal research or give legal advice, but we can direct your research within the available resources.

**

Free legal assistance is not provided by the law school, although the library staff can direct users to Legal Assistance Programs in Wyoming.

**

Legal Services Clinic is offered through the law school curriculum.  This is not a walk-in service.  The clinic operates in conjunction with Albany County servicing pro bono cases.  Clients must file an application and be recommended by the county to qualify. For more information call (307) 766-2104.

George William Hopper

George William Hopper

George William Hopper was born in Cleveland and graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree with honors. He moved with his family to Cody, Wyoming in 1952 where his father served as an Episcopal parish priest. Hopper graduated from the University of Wyoming College of Law with honors in 1956. During his time as a student, he served as Chancellor of the Potter Law Club and as Editor-in-Chief of the Wyoming Law Journal. He was also instrumental in founding Omicron Delta Kappa national student leadership honorary society. Following his graduation, Hopper became an associate at Byron Hirst, Esq. of Cheyenne and in 1960 was appointed Trial Attorney in the S.E.C. Regional Office in Denver. He resigned that position to be a visiting professor in the College of Law during the 1963-64 academic year, teaching securities law. He then practiced securities law in Denver with the firm of Hopper & Kanouff, P.C. Throughout this career, Hopper maintained ties to the university and organized meetings and reunions for alumni in the Denver area. He died in 1986. Sally Hunter Hopper, his widow, and Carl M. Williams, a classmate, contributed to the costs of the law library addition, which was finished in 1993. The George William Hopper Law Library was dedicated on November 6, 1993. A bronze bust of Hopper, created by sculptor George Lundeen, is on display in the library.
