Federal funding agencies requirements for research security training to submit proposals:
- Department of Energy (DOE) DOE Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) will include a requirement for all covered individuals to complete research security training in the 12 months immediately preceding the application date. Covered individuals from recipients or subrecipients who are added to an existing DOE award that includes the research security training requirement must complete the training within 30 calendar days of joining.
- National Science Foundation (NSF) All individuals identified as senior/key personnel must complete the requisite research security training that meets the research security training requirements within 12 months prior to application submission.
- National Institute of Health (NIH) All individuals identified as a senior/key person must complete training that covers disclosure requirements for Current and Pending (Other) Support within 12 months prior to application submission. Completion of the condensed module on Research Security satisfies this training requirement.
- U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) All Covered Individuals working on an award are required to complete the research security training either at the time of application, where applicable, or within the 12-month period immediately preceding the commencement of work on the award and must recertify annually for the duration of the award.
- National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) In accordance with Grant Information Circular 26‑02, Research Security Training Requirements, all covered individuals named on NASA grant and cooperative agreement proposals will be required to attest that they have completed research security training prior to proposal submission beginning August 5, 2026. This attestation will be made by signing a certification included in the NASA biographical sketch and current and pending (other) support forms.
Annual training during the life of the award:
- Annual Certification at the time of the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR): Individuals serving as senior/key personnel must continue to certify annually that they have completed training within the past 12 months.
As other agencies are adding the requirement for research security training, we encourage all University researchers to complete the approximately one-hour research security training.
