"Water Bear": Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope

The ZEISS LSM 980 laser scanning confocal microscope is an exceptional tool for bioscience microscopy experiments. The ZEISS LSM 980 is equipped with Airyscan 2 (including Multiplex) and a Piezo stage, delivering outstanding imaging performance while minimizing phototoxicity and ensuring precise and high-speed operation. This system excels at capturing high-resolution images of both fixed and live specimens in 4D with remarkable precision, even under weak signal conditions. In addition to the instrument itself, the Zen software, coupled with a powerful workstation, enables comprehensive data processing. This system was provided by Dr. Thomas Boothby's lab from Molecular Biology.

Instrument Highlights

  • Airyscan 2 with Multiplex:

Airyscan 2 takes microscopy to the next level with its circularly arranged detection elements, offering greater light efficiency and structural information. Joint Deconvolution pushes the resolution down to 90 nm, enabling the visualization of even finer details in the samples. Multiplex modes combine Airyscan detector advantages with optimized illumination and readout schemes, allowing scientists to capture more spatial information and improve acquisition speed. This is ideal for large fields of view and whole sample volumes.

  • Piezo Stage:

The Piezo stage allows for precise stepping in Z, with built-in Z-drift compensation. The motorized stage also operates in X and Y, allowing for precise tiling of images to capture and reconstruct images larger than the field of view.

  • Detection Range:

The laser and detector setup allows for imaging of virtually all standard UV, green, red, and far-red fluorophores/FPs/dyes.

  • Low Labeling Density:

Use low labeling density to reduce disturbance to the biological samples.

  • Environmental Controlled Stage:

An optional stage insert with temperature, CO2, and humidity control allows for long-term live imaging of cells.

  • ZEN Microscopy Software:

Utilize AI Sample Finder, Smart Setup, and Direct Processing with the ZEN software and a workstation, streamlining the microscopy workflow and enhancing data analysis capabilities.
