Coal Refinery Project Progression
Fast Pyrolysis: Bench Scale
Beginning in 2016, the CCCC successfully developed an integrated system in the lab between the solvent extraction and fast pyrolysis technologies to produce valuable feedstock for coal-derived products. Both these technologies were either batch or semi-batch processes at this scale.
Fast Pyrolysis: Pilot Plant Scale
Feed Rate: 5kg/hr (0.13 TPD)
A pilot plant of the pyrolysis technology has run successfully on the UW campus since 2024 to validate the continuous process on a larger scale, identifying engineering challenges and optimizing parameters for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Fast Pyrolysis: Field Demonstration Plant
Feed rate: 10 TPD
Located at the Wyoming Innovation Center near Gillette, WY., the pyrolysis portion of the project has completed detailed engineering and procured major pieces of equipment.
Construction will begin in the summer of 2025.
Operation will commence in late 2026.
Solvent Extraction: Bench Scale
Beginning in 2016, the CCCC successfully developed an integrated system in the lab between the solvent extraction and fast pyrolysis technologies to produce valuable feedstock for coal-derived products. Both these technologies were either batch or semi-batch processes at this scale.
Solvent Extraction: Pilot Plant Scale
Feed rate: 10 kg/hr (0.26 TPD)
Following the success in the lab, the transition to a pilot plant marks a pivotal step towards commercialization. Here, the technology is scaled up by orders of magnitude, moving from semi batch runs 20(1 kg sample) to a 20 kg/hr continuous process. The pilot plant is located at the University of Wyoming with production expected to start in 2025.
Solvent Extraction: Field Demonstration Plant
Feed Rate: 11 TPD
Simultaneously with an eye on the future, detailed engineering for the solvent extraction technology field demonstration plant will start in the fall of 2025, followed by procurement of equipment in the spring/summer of 2026. Construction for this portion of the plant will commence in the summer of 2026.
