Our Services

Student Legal Services (SLS) is a service provided by the Associated Students of the University of Wyoming (ASUW) for all full-fee paying University of Wyoming students.

Students must complete the Intake Process to receive services. Please follow the instructions on the Schedule an Appointment page.

Student Legal Services offers a full-time, licensed attorney to assist University of Wyoming students.

All meetings with the SLS attorney are confidential.

The SLS attorney can assist students in a wide variety of subject areas including:

  • Landlord tenant law
  • Criminal law
  • Family law
  • General civil law
  • Immigration law

The Student Legal Services attorney can assist students in multiple ways including:

  • Information and advice
  • Demand letters
  • Legal document preparation
  • Referral resources

Generally, after meeting with the Student Legal Services attorney and receiving information and advice, students understand the situation, their options, and are confident moving forward on their own.

Please be aware that, while the attorney makes every effort to assist students to the fullest extent possible, some areas of law are so specialized that the attorney may be able to offer only generalized advice.  In the situation where the attorney does not have the knowledge to assist the student with direct advice SLS will provide the student with referral resources.

Student Legal Services cannot:

  • assist a student who has a legal dispute against another University of Wyoming Student;
  • assist a student who has a legal dispute against the University of Wyoming;
  • assist a student who has a legal dispute against a University of Wyoming student group;
  • represent students in court.

Eligibility

Assistance from Student Legal Services is available to all full-fee paying University of Wyoming students. Full-time University of Wyoming students pay the SLS fee as part of their fee package.  Part-time students who pay for the optional fee package are also eligible for SLS assistance. Students who are not eligible may be referred outward.
