- About UW
The recently renovated and expanded Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA), which houses the Departments of Theatre and Dance and Music, as well as UW Events and Cultural Outreach, boasts some of the best-equipped and finest small performing arts venues and support facilities in the Rocky Mountain region, including:
BCPA Theatre and Dance Performing Venues, the 385-seat Main Stage proscenium theatre, the 256-seat, state-of-the-art Thrust Theatre, and the 140-seat experimental black box Studio Theatre (venues for the Department of Music are the 100-seat Recital Hall and the 600-seat Concert Hall).
Theatre and Dance Primary Teaching Spaces, including Mains Dance Studio, Dance Studio 2, Acting Studio; Crane Studio (Acting-for-the-Camera); and the Design/Tech Laboratory.
BCPA Public Spaces, including the Main Lobby, Thrust Lobby, Studio Theatre Lobby, and Encore Cafe.
BCPA Theatre and Dance Performing Venues include the Main Stage, the Thrust Theatre, and the Studio Theatre.
The Main Stage is a fully equipped, 375-seat, traditional proscenium theatre. Larger productions, historical pieces, musicals, and operas are most commonly performed on Main Stage.
The Thrust Theatre is a beautiful new, state-of-the art, 256-seat venue that allows for flexible staging. The Thrust is used for mid-size productions, as well as those requiring use of multiple levels and open staging.
The Studio Theatre is a 140-seat, experimental black box theatre, complete with its own grid and booth. The Studio Theatre is used primarily for student productions and capstone projects, and less frequently for smaller, main season productions.
Theatre and Dance Primary Teaching Spaces include the Mains Dance Studio, Dance Studio 2, Acting Studio, Crane Studio (Acting-for-the-Camera Studio); and the Design/Tech Laboratory.
The Mains Dance Studio houses dance rehearsals and educational activities. It is adjacent to Dance Studio 2, receiving natural light from that clerestory; the dance spaces are able to operate simultaneously.
The new Dance Studio 2 makes good use of ample natural light through a dramatic clerestory. Dancers are visible from the BCPA Box Office land bridge, as well as from east and west windows along the BCPA Lobby and corridors. The Studio is adjacent to the Pilates studio and changing rooms.
Crane Studio is the acting-for-the-camera classroom, as well as a multi-use teaching laboratory, and is used informally for rehearsals and performances. Crane Studio also has a sprung floor for dance and musical theatre applications.
The new state-of-the-art Acting Studio functions as our primary acting teaching laboratory. The Acting Studio mimics the Main Stage in width and depth, allowing early production work, such as blocking and setting of dance or fight choreography, to be undertaken in the space.
The Design/Tech Lab is a fully equipped smart classroom with convertible drafting tables for all design applications.
Public spaces within the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts include the Main Lobby, Thrust Theatre Lobby, Studio Theatre Lobby, Encore Cafe, and Box Office.
The Main Lobby is located between the Main Stage and Concert Hall and serves both venues.
The Thrust Theatre Lobby is located just north of the new main east entrance to the BCPA and serves the Thrust Theatre and the Recital Hall.
The Studio Theatre Lobby is located at the base of the stairs from the Main Lobby, directly in front of the Studio Theatre. The Studio Theatre Lobby and venue are ADA accessible from an elevator adjacent to the Department of Music west entrance.
Located in the Buchanan Center for Performing Arts, Encore Café serves Starbucks Coffee, as well as a variety of fresh pastries from our Rolling Mill Bakery at Washakie. Encore sells packaged sushi, sandwiches and salads, including some items made specially for the café. All food items are made fresh daily. Bottled drinks are also available.
