Pursue your passion for music with an audio technology certificate

The audio technology certificate prepares students to work in creative and professional environments doing what they love most — working with music and audio technology!

Because of the hands-on nature of the certificate, graduates leave UW with the confidence to pursue their own music-making endeavors, event production and work with musical artists.

About the Audio Technology Certificate

The audio technology certificate gives students hands-on experience  and education that allows them to enter the commercial music workforce with a marketable skill set.

During their time at UW, students learn how to record and manipulate recorded sounds as well as provide live sound reinforcement for concerts or events.

The audio technology certificate may be pursued on its own or in conjunction with any university degree program.

Audio Technology Program Highlights

At the University of Wyoming, we know it’s important to fuel students’ passions and give them experiential learning opportunities to hone their skills. The audio technology program does exactly that. Students pursue passion projects in their capstone course, work alongside notable faculty members and have access to all the specialty equipment they need.

Here are some of the program highlights you’ll experience as a student.

Small Class Sizes & Hands-On Learning

The audio technology program utilizes small class sizes to give students individual attention and hands-on learning experiences. For example, students form bands and produce recordings when studying recording techniques. This gives students an up-close look at the recording process, including tracking, overdubbing, mixing and mastering.

Capstone Course

Each audio technology student pursues a capstone course or internship experience. This allows students to pursue their individual interests and ensures they graduate with marketable experience.

Capstone projects may include: self-producing an album, recording a band or ensemble, exploring advanced mix and mastering techniques or assisting local live sound providers regularly.

Networking Opportunities

Students have many opportunities to interact with professionals at the Gryphon Theatre as well as sound engineers, technicians and sound companies in the local community.

Specialty Equipment

Audio technology students have access to a suite of recording and live sound equipment including: interfaces, MIDI controllers, digital and analog mixing boards, loudspeakers and microphones. Additionally, the BCPA computer lab is outfitted with MIDI keyboards, an audio interface and broadcast-quality dynamic microphones. Industry-standard Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) are also available at each computer station.

The audio certificate program is a great way to explore, learn and become efficient with different tools needed for live sound, recording and individual purposes in a modern context. Personally, tasks and assignments for the certificate are for the benefit of the individual and happen to be flexible enough to the point where I have plenty of time to pursue my own interests.
