Our students enjoy exciting study abroad programs, international service projects and cultural events that allow students to practice their skills in real-world contexts.

Students not only gain language proficiency and a community of like-minded peers, but they also graduate with a profound understanding of Chinese culture. Our program prepares students to become international leaders, ambassadors and contributors.

About the Chinese Minor

The Chinese minor is a 19-credit-hour program that includes introductory language courses, advanced electives and a study abroad intensive. Together, these components give students a comprehensive education of the Chinese language and Chinese, Singaporean and Malaysian cultures.

Outside of the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in service projects, clubs, exchange programs and more — all of which enhance their connection to and understanding of the Chinese language and culture.

Chinese Minor Program Highlights

UW’s Chinese program is highly regarded by students and faculty for good reason. Our students enjoy study abroad programs, research projects, a high-tech language lab and community-driven student organizations.

Study Abroad Programs in Asia

Ready to broaden your global perspective? UW facilitates exciting study abroad opportunities in China, Singapore and Malaysia. On these trips, students gain insight into these regions’ traditions and social norms while practicing their language skills. Students may have the opportunity to stay with host families or complete internships while abroad. UW additionally offers scholarships and grants to help offset the cost of study abroad programs.

Faculty-Led Research

Students frequently partner with faculty and peers to complete research on language, literature, cultural studies and history. These projects are a great way to prepare for advanced studies and professional careers.

International Service Projects

As part of the Chinese minor, students may choose to participate in international and domestic service projects. In these projects, students teach Chinese culture in local schools, volunteer with cultural organizations and introduce American culture to Malaysian children.

Exchange Programs

The Modern and Classical Languages Department facilitates one-of-a-kind exchange programs that pair students with native Chinese speakers. These programs enhance students’ conversational skills and cultural understanding while giving them an opportunity to build connections with others.

Associated Students with Interests in China (ASIC)

Making friends and getting involved in the community are important and fulfilling parts of the college experience. The Associated Students with Interests in China (ASIC) makes it easy! This student organization hosts events and fosters a supportive community for those passionate about Chinese culture and language.

Language Labs & Tutors

We’re here to help you succeed! That’s why the UW Chinese program provides students with access to specialized resources to enhance their learning experience. As a Chinese minor, you can utilize one-on-one and group tutoring sessions to improve your language skills. You’ll have access to UW’s digital libraries which hold extensive collections of Chinese literature, history, films, music and cultural artifacts. Students can also use the language lab, which is equipped with advanced technology and interactive tools for language practice.

The Chinese program at UW quite literally changed my life. I joined on a whim and not only finished with a new and valuable skill, but I forged so many new relationships with other individuals in the program and across the world. Prof. Zhang is truly dedicated to her students and passionate about teaching. She inspires a genuine passion for learning, and appreciation for Chinese culture and language, and I can honestly say that Prof. Zhang is one of, if not the most amazing teacher I have ever had the honor of studying under. There are so many opportunities to grow, and if I could do it again I would in a heartbeat. I simply cannot recommend the Chinese program enough!
