Become a school health teacher through UW’s health educator endorsement program

Health educators play an important role in every child’s education. They teach children and teenagers about nutrition, personal health, exercise, sexuality and substances. In many ways, they become advisors for kids and teens during sensitive and vulnerable life transitions. This makes UW’s online health educator certification program a wonderful addition to any teaching degree, particularly the physical education teacher educator program.

About the Health Educator Certification

The health educator certification program is a well-rounded, online program that prepares graduates to teach health education to grades K-12 in Wyoming.

You may pursue this endorsement whether or not you’re already a Physical Education Teacher Education major at UW. However, if you are not, you must have a bachelor’s degree in teaching at the secondary level from an approved university program.

This endorsement is an excellent supplement to any teaching degree, as it gives students the tools to teach nutrition, personal health and sensitive topics related to human sexuality.

Non-Physical Education Teacher Education Majors: You must complete a bachelor’s degree in teaching at the secondary level from an approved university program. They will then complete the 21 credit hours that are required for the health teacher certification. This certification is required to teach health education in grades K-12 in the public schools of Wyoming.

Physical Education Teacher Education Majors: Only upper-level students will be considered. Freshman and Sophomore students will not be admitted to the health teacher endorsement program.

Health Educator Certification Program Highlights

UW has a well-respected physical education teacher educator program, and the health teacher certification program is a wonderful extension of it. Learn more about what our students enjoy most.

Cohort Model

Many students seeking a health educator certification are already part of UW’s Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program. One of the many benefits of the PETE program is that it uses a cohort approach, so students progress through each semester with the same group of peers. Cohorts provide a supportive environment and help students create meaningful relationships with like-minded peers.

High Job Placement Rate

Our health and physical education educators are highly sought after and typically receive multiple job offers. In fact, UW’s Physical Education Teacher Education program has had a 100% job placement rate for the last five years. School administrators commonly reach out to our faculty to announce position openings and get insights on candidates.
