The musical theatre program offers a well-rounded education in acting, voice and dance, emphasising both traditional and contemporary musical theatre styles. Students receive hands-on production experience, flexible elective options, vocal training and plenty of performance opportunities.

About the Theatre & Dance Programs

The musical theatre minor blends acting, singing and dance, giving students a well-rounded education in multiple performance disciplines. Our musical theatre classes are specifically designed to foster confidence, collaboration and creativity while giving students the flexibility to choose the courses that excite them. Flexible elective options include movement for actors, history of musical theatre and 20th century theatre diversity.

This minor is only available to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the theatre and dance department.

Musical theatre production at UW

 

Musical theatre students have access to UW’s state-of-the art performance spaces, rehearsal studios and technology. These resources include:

  • Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (BCPA): This building houses the theatre and dance department and features multiple performance venues.
  • Main Stage Theatre: A professional-quality proscenium theatre used for large-scale musicals and productions.
  • Studio Theatre: A flexible, black-box theatre ideal for experimental works, smaller productions and student-led showcases.
  • Recital Hall: A high-quality performance space often used for voice showcases and concerts.
    Acting, music and dance studios: These dedicated spaces are equipped with mirrors, barres, pianos, sound equipment, sprung floors and lighting.
  • Costume and scene shops: Students have access to costume design facilities for fittings and a scene shop for hands-on experience in set design.

Performance Experience

From UW stage productions to performance-based classes, the musical theatre minor is filled with opportunities to take the stage. In addition to UW live theatre performances, all students take a musical theatre workshop, which involves voice and acting training, scene study and full-scale productions. Students additionally have the opportunity to showcase their abilities in student-led showcases and UW’s annual one-act play festival.

CURRENT PRODUCTIONS

UW offers a wide variety of exciting study abroad programs that enhance our students’ education and broaden their perspectives. Musical theatre students may be interested in training programs in London, New York or other theatre hubs that offer workshops in acting, voice and movement from world-class instructors. This exposure to global theatre traditions enhances students’ versatility and understanding of different performance styles.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS

UW musical theatre students are highly regarded in the local community and often complete internships in theatres across the country. These work experiences offer networking opportunities, exposure to professional rehearsal environments and hands-on experience in performance, directing and production. Our theatre and dance faculty provide guidance and connections to regional and national theatre companies, often helping students gain industry experience and contacts.
