About the Nuclear Energy Science Program

The nuclear energy science certificate program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in nuclear energy fields, both in Wyoming and beyond. This program provides undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wyoming with the opportunity to earn a credential grounded in nuclear energy science and technology, preparing them for rewarding careers as nuclear engineers or other roles in the nuclear industry.

The certificate requires 15 credit hours, typically completed over the course of two years. Students will take a two-course core series focusing on the fundamentals of nuclear energy science and reactor design, along with three elective courses exploring topics such as nuclear physics and advanced applications in nuclear energy. Both undergraduate and graduate certificates are available, offering flexible options for students at different stages of their academic journey.

Fundamentals of Nuclear Physics: Understand the basic principles behind nuclear energy production by exploring key concepts in nuclear physics, including decay chains and energy densities in industrial applications.

Hands-On Opportunities

There are many exciting things on and off campus happening in nuclear energy. Nuclear focused internships, research and service/experiential learning, we’ll provide students with hands-on experience in nuclear technology right here in Wyoming. Whether through internships or job placements post-certification, students will gain invaluable exposure to the nuclear energy field. Our fully operational Nuclear Energy Research Center (NERC) allows students to explore specific applications of nuclear science and energy in the state. Additionally, we aim to connect students with industry leaders like Idaho National Labs for further growth in nuclear energy careers. The new TerraPower advanced nuclear reactor can offer exciting opportunities for students interested in nuclear energy. UW also has a chapter of the American Nuclear Society that brings in guest speakers and arranges industry field trips!

Among them are Caleb Hill, Associate Professor in Chemistry, JE Warren, Chair in Energy and Environmental Policies and Neilson Faculty Fellow, who brings invaluable expertise to nuclear energy research. Tara Righetti, SER Professor of Law and Occidental Chair in Energy and Environmental Policies, offers a unique perspective on energy law and policy, contributing to a well-rounded education in nuclear technology and energy science.

They can also join the American Nuclear Society’s student chapter (ANS Club), a great way to connect with like-minded peers and professionals in the nuclear science field. Additionally, students can participate in conferences hosted by the Nuclear Energy Research Center (NERC). 

 

The cross-pollination of ideas, perspectives and expertise from SER/CEPS will produce graduates who are well-rounded, adaptive and prepared to tackle the complex issues surrounding nuclear energy resources in today's rapidly changing world. Furthermore, the skills and knowledge imparted through this program will empower graduates to make meaningful contributions to the energy sectors, thereby addressing societal needs and global challenges.
