Shelley Jewell is the Director of Education Abroad at the University of Wyoming (UW), where she leads a team in the development and administration of education abroad programs including faculty-directed programs, student advising and support, and all related services. She oversees risk management as well as student health and safety and serves on university committees related to international services.  Additionally, Shelley assists and advises the state of Wyoming with their international relations.  Prior to joining UWyoAbroad, Shelley was the Director of Study Abroad at Belmont University in Nashville, TN and the Assistant Director of the Global Education Office at Vanderbilt University as in Nashville, TN.

Shelley has served as an evaluator for the U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Fulbright International Education Administrators Grant (Germany).  She is a member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, the CO/WY Consortium of International Educators and the Fulbright Association.  Shelley has served on the advisory board of Arcadia Abroad: College of Global Studies and SAI Programs.

Shelley is currently pursuing her doctor of education from the University of Wyoming in higher education administration.  She holds a master’s degree in international education policy management with a concentration in higher education from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and a bachelor’s degree in international economics and sociology from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She was awarded the International Education Administrators Fulbright grant to Germany in 2009.  Her interest in different cultures led her to study abroad as an undergraduate in Ireland and to continue traveling extensively throughout her career.  Studying abroad not only changed her as a person but inspired her to work in the field to help others have similar experiences whether by internationalizing the campuses where she works or supporting students in their study abroad journey.

Shelley’s areas of interest are in creating meaningful community partnerships abroad and maximizing the impact of short-term programming through experiential education and service learning.  She is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in education abroad and works to create access for all students at UW.  In her free time, Shelley is a mom to three little people and one spotted dog.  She enjoys exploring all the beauty of Wyoming with her family, trying new foods and traveling of course!

Meet with Shelley if you are interested in the following education abroad programs:

  • Scholarships (UW, Gilman and Critical Language)
  • Ireland
  • ISEP
