The department at any one time has 30+ undergraduate students working in various research
and diagnostic laboratories. Depending on the position students obtain hands on experience
in laboratory diagnostic medicine, and laboratory or field research. Experience gained
by students includes animal autopsy (necropsy), and molecular diagnostic approaches
such as PCR, and ELISA.
Working in a laboratory builds strong relationships with mentors, advisors and other
students, allowing for more solid letters of recommendation for future career paths.
We encourage students to concentrate on their studies during their freshman year so
they can make a smooth transition from high school to the university setting. Students
can also obtain credits towards their degrees through obtaining research experience.
