Other Student Opportunities
Events
- Fall Retreat - Held annually on the UW campus for CC and UWC students and faculty with a focus
explicitly on next steps and opportunities for students participating in INBRE pursuing
advanced education and careers in the biomedical sciences. Also focus on building
networks between CC and UW faculty. Students and faculty attend flash talks and posters
presented by UW undergraduate and graduate student constituents, laboratory and research
core tours and demonstrations, and presentations by departments and student recruiters.
Significant time for networking provided.
- Annual WY INBRE Conference and Wyoming Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Day - The spring Annual WY INBRE Conference is a 3-day conference held in the late spring
concurrently with Wyoming Undergraduate Research and Inquiry Day (formerly Wyoming
Undergraduate Research Days). The event brings together at UW in Laramie all INBRE
faculty and students, the EAC and SC, and other constituents for scientific presentations
and posters by INBRE DRPP investigators, CC Network Institution Coordinators, and
graduate and undergraduate students.
- SRP Summer Symposium - Held at the conclusion of the UW Summer SRP, interns present results of their summer
projects to student colleagues, faculty mentors, administrators, parents, and other
constituents.
- Videoconference Seminar Series - Regularly scheduled virtual presentations by INBRE-funded investigators (UW and
CC), visiting scientists, and UW investigators doing biomedical research. Two seminars
are scheduled each semester. Speakers provide one or two recent publications prior
to the seminar, and faculty are encouraged to share and discuss these with students
on their campuses to help prepare them for the session.
- Distance Course Program - This program offers via distance technology (online and/or videoconferencing) junior-
and senior-level courses for CC students so they can delay transfer to UW to complete
their bachelor’s degree. This enhances access to STEM academic programs and reduces
personal and financial hardships that could negatively impact academic progress and
success. The courses also provide students who are uncertain about their academic
abilities the opportunity to experience advanced courses that may help increase their
confidence or desire to pursue a bachelor’s degree and beyond. Each year, five courses
developed with INBRE support are offered via web conferencing and online. These include
(1) Cell Biology, (2) Genetics, (3) HIV/AIDS: The Disease and the Dilemma, (4) Principles
of Biochemistry, and (5) Evolutionary Biology.
RAIN Summer Student Program
Competitive opportunity for undergraduate students from RAIN institutions to engage
during the summer in a full-time (40 hours/week) mentored research projects with current
and past INBRE-funded and other biomedical research faculty. For these awards, students
select a mentor from a list of selected UW investigators with a record of undergraduate
mentoring success who have volunteered to host summer RAIN students. The list also
provides short descriptions of mentor research projects available to students. For
RAIN participants awarded an “in residence” position, the INBRE AC will work with
the student’s home INBRE program to arrange housing. Recruitment occurs via posting
on the INBRE and RAIN websites and by email notices to RAIN INBRE offices. Learn more>
