UW Undergraduate Research Program Descriptions
Academic Year Internship
UW students only - Competitive opportunity for UW students to engage during the fall and spring terms
in mentored research projects with current and past INBRE-funded and other biomedical
research faculty. For these awards, students work with a research mentor to write
and submit a research proposal that is reviewed by a committee made up of the SRP
Director, PD/PI, PC, experienced faculty, and INBRE-supported graduate students. The
SRP can help students find mentors if they have not already identified a faculty member
from previous research or coursework. Mentor–student matches also occur when faculty
recruit top students from their courses. Requests for proposals from students are
distributed via student email lists, posters distributed across campus, and the WY
INBRE website and are announced in key courses by faculty early in the fall term.
The preferred path into these fellowships is to engage in a research lab at some level
before attempting to write a research proposal. This can be volunteering, independent
credit, or shadowing a lab in an informal lab rotation to understand the research
focus in a lab.
Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunities
UW Summer Fellowships for UW students - Competitive opportunity for undergraduate students to engage during the summer
in full-time (40 hours/week) mentored research projects with current and past INBRE-funded
and other biomedical research faculty. For these awards, UW students apply as outlined
above. Selection is based on academic record, faculty letters of support, and research
proposal quality.
RAIN program for visiting RAIN state students - Students from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and Nevada are eligible
to apply for a WY INBRE Summer Research (WISR) internship. Students select potential
mentors from a list of UW investigators with a record of undergraduate mentoring success
who have volunteered to host summer WISR students. The list describes the primary
research focus of each host lab and is linked to the research website. For RAIN participants
who earn a visiting RAIN research award, WY INBRE will work with the student’s home
INBRE program to arrange housing and travel. Recruitment occurs via posting on the
INBRE and RAIN websites and by email notices to RAIN network.
The Wyoming INBRE program is a 10-week research experience for visiting RAIN undergraduate
students interested in biomedical research. In addition to conducting guided research,
students will attend training sessions and present their research at the annual WY
INBRE Summer Research Symposium on Thursday July 24, 2025. WISR informational flyer

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) - for WY Community College transfers
only - Each summer, 1-2 UW labs offer to host REUs for WY Community College students who
will be transferring to UW the following fall. These awards are competitive for independent
mentored research projects. The stipend is the same as the other UW summer undergraduate
awards and interns are expected to engage weekly with the summer research cohort and
present research at the INBRE Summer Research Symposium. Applications are submitted
online and include a letter of intent, transcripts, CV/resume, and faculty reference
letter. Candidates may be asked to interview with the host lab. These REUs are announced
through the WY Community College network and INBRE website.
