SciComm student publishes op-ed in Scientific American. PhD candidate Sam Case, a student in the Tarwater Lab, Department of Zoology & Physiology, and the Program in Ecology & Evolution (PiEE), recently published an op-ed he developed in the spring 2021 course Science of Science Communication. Case's op-ed explores a complex aspect of his research on birds invasive to Hawai'i: can invasive species replace extinct native birds' seed distribution functions and help native plants persist? WySCI director co-authors scicomm research paper. WySCI director and co-founder Bethann Garramon Merkle co-authored an article about mixed-methods approaches to understanding public preferences for land management in the U.K. The team used collages and surveys to understand public preferences about ag land management. Details.

SciComm student publishes children's book. PhD candidate Michelle Mason, a student in the Department of Astronomy and Physics, recently published a children's book now available in print and ebook formats. Phoebe the Photon Explores the Universe introduces young readers to astronomy fundamentals. From the Big Bang to quasars to our own Milky Way Galaxy, Phoebe shows you the wonderful astronomical objects that exist throughout space. Phoebe the Photon Explores the Universe is an educational astronomy picture book for young readers interested in science.
