ABOUT THE NELTJE CENTER for excellence in creativity and the arts

The Neltje Center provides a sanctuary for UW students, faculty and other creatives to unleash their imagination in one of the most scenic areas of Wyoming, near the Bighorns just south of Sheridan. It's a place where writers, painters, and creators of all kinds can find inspiration in the natural beauty and incredible artwork that surrounds them. In this unique environment, arists are empowered to push the boundaries of their craft, experiment with new ideas, and create works that challenge the status quo. The center is named after Neltje, a renowned painter and philanthropist who, in 2001, founded the Jentel Artist Residency. Learn more about the Neltje Center here

    ART TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

    July 30 - August 2

    At the Neltje Center

    In partnership with the University of Wyoming Art Museum (UWAM) Education Team the UW Neltje Center will host the second of two intensive 2.5-day workshops for K-12 visual art educators in Wyoming. Participant cohorts consist of art teachers working around the state, including Crook, Campbell, Big Horn, Washakie, and Fremont Counties. Topics of study include arts integration, object-based teaching and learning (teaching with art objects and facilitating discussion), as well as dedicated art making time and networking opportunities. The Neltje Center plays an integral role in facilitating this unique opportunity to enrich Arts Education in Wyoming. Interested art teachers can sign up for this program here.

    COLLECTIVE ARTS FESTIVAL

    Saturday August 10, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

    At the Whitney Commons in Sheridan

    Local arts organizations are joining forces to present Collective Arts Festival, a day-long celebration of the arts, on Saturday, August 10, at Whitney Commons in downtown Sheridan, Wyoming. The free, family-friendly event will include music and dance performances, art demos, literary and poetry readings, children’s arts activities, and artisan booths, as well as food trucks and a beer garden. The Neltje Center is proud to host the festival as a member of the Bighorn Arts Collective. The Neltje center will be bringing in Michaela Ellingson and Bailey Walker of Dancer's Workshop Jackson to perform.

    NELTJE AS COLLECTOR

    June 22, 2024 - January 6, 2025

    At the University of Wyoming Art Museum

    Neltje's interest in art went far beyond her work as a painter. She enjoyed collecting the paintings, sculptures, and ceramics of artists she loved regionally and nationally. She also traveled extensively around the world and collected the work of artists and artisans from Papua New Guinea, Africa, Indonesia and beyond. This exhibition features highlights from Neltje's extensive collection, shedding light on her interests and aesthetic taste.

The Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts serves to achive the following goals. 

  • Expand opportunities for visual, literary, and performing art students to achieve excellence in their fields.

  • Strengthen Jentel’s reputation as a nationally recognized artist residency.

  • Collaborate with cross-sector partners to contribute to Wyoming’s creative economy through innovative professional development programing and excellent arts experiences for community members and visitors.
