There is no official major in African American & Diaspora Studies, but the Director is prepared to be the primary advisor to students pursuing a Self-Designed Major in African American & Diaspora Studies that include the following elements:
AADS is a 21-credit hour minor. Students are required to take 3 core courses and the Capstone course for a total of 12 credits. The remaining courses can be selected from any of the thematic track courses. Please see the for more information.
African American & Diaspora Studies graduate course offerings pair well UW graduate education generally. Graduate students are able to choose from a variety of graduate level courses that often enhance their graduate educational opportunities in their home department. The majority of the graduate students who take our courses are earning graduate degrees in Communication & Journalism, Education, English, Global & Area Studies, History, and Law. Our faculty are also able to serve as graduate committee chairs, co-chairs, and members to master’s and Ph.D. committees.
