Myles Horton

Founded Folk School in Tennessee called "Highlander" in 1932

Two Emphasis:

  • Education never simply reaffirms status quo, but challenges it so real change results
  • Education was grounded in real struggles of people for their own lives and adult experience as content & reflection/dialog as process of adult learning

Major Tenets

  • Believed that education not primarily a function of formal learning, but the total social environment
  • Large influence among disenfranchised adult learners in impoverished South
  • Famous for social change created by Highlander attendees. (e.g., Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King)
