Jack Mezirow

Was professor of Adult Education at Teachers College, Columbia University

Credited with new approach to adult learning called "perspective transformation"

  • Viewed it as a way to assess how and why we come to our views of the world, and
  • How we can re-assess our assumptions to come up with new meanings & roles, which leads to
  • Personal & (perhaps) social transformation

The process of transformation often begins with a "disorienting dilemma"

For example, Mezirow worked with divorced women who had been hurt, wanted to learn from past and move on to a new future

  • "Life" does not work as it did before
  • Gives impetus to re-assess previous assumptions & transform to new views
