Admissions
Freshman Admission Requirements - Effective Through Summer 2013
Assured Admission
To qualify for assured admission to the University of Wyoming, high school graduates who are new first-year college students, or have fewer than 30 transferable semester college credit hours, must meet the following admission requirements.
Graduates of a Wyoming high school must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.75 or above based on a 4.0 grading scale. Students must submit an official ACT or SAT score to be admitted.
Graduates of a non-Wyoming high school must have a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 or above based on a 4.0 grading scale, with a composite ACT score of at least 20 or a SAT composite score of at least 960 (combined math and verbal).
Graduates with less than 30 transferable college credit hours must have a cumulative transferable college grade point average of at least 2.0, in addition to the requirements for Wyoming or non-Wyoming high school graduates.
All freshman students must have completed at least 13 high school units from the following precollege curriculum (one unit = one year):
- Four units of english/communication/language arts
- Three units must contain a substantial writing component.
- Speech and other communication-base courses with substantial writing components may meet this requirement.
- You may also meet the requirement by completing three units in english/communication/language arts, plus two units of the same foreign language.
- Three units of mathematics
- You must include a college preparatory Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry sequence.
- Taking Algebra II, Geometry, or a higher-level math course is recommended during your senior year.
- Three units of science
- At least one unit must be from the physical sciences: physics, chemistry, or a college preparatory physical science course.
- The remaining two units may be from any combination of biological, life, physical, or earth/space science courses.
- Three cultural context units
- Selected from the behavioral or social sciences, visual or performing arts, humanities, or foreign languages.
Home schooled students must meet the same requirements as other high school graduates. The home school instructor should complete the Home School Credit Evaluation Form and send it to the Admissions Office.
Conditional Admission
Admission with conditions may be granted if you don't qualify for assured admission but can satisfy the following requirements.
You must be a graduate of an accredited high school with at least a 2.5 GPA or a 2.25 GPA with a composite ACT score of at least 20 or a composite SAT score of at least 960 (combined math and verbal). If you're concerned about your chances for admission, you may want to include an essay and letters of recommendation with your application.
You'll need to complete the pre-college curriculum with no more than two deficiencies. No more than one deficiency may be in any of the four categories.
Conditional admission may close earlier than assured admission, so students should apply early. Freshmen students admitted with conditions will be required to take part in Synergy, a national award-winning mentoring and support program that assists in the transition to college and increases the academic success rate for participants. Synergy pairs individuals with faculty and staff mentors, promotes time management and study skills, and allows for groups of 20 students to take classes together their first semester.
If you don't qualify right now for assured admission or admission with conditions, you may have your UW admission deferred until you you complete 30 or more transferable semester credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or higher at another accredited college.
We realize there may be special cases or unusual circumstances not covered by assured admission or admission with conditions. For more information about admission by exception, or if you have any other questions about our admission process, please contact our office.
