Minutes from AGSC meeting February 8, 2008
People Attending: Christy Montgomery, Elizabeth Lynch, Dori Ridneour, Marit Bovey, Amanda Davey, Molly Karnopp, Orrin Koenig, Caroline Ketron, Christopher Young, Shanna Cox, Meg Morris, Bryon Schroeder, Patrick Mullen, Sarah Ewing
Topic – The Constitution Overall, there are no major objections to the constitution as it is written. A few concerns: Define ‘inappropriate behavior’ – Shanna to investigate WCA editions – Might be problematic to have dues at $35 (including $10 for a copy of the WCA for that year). If something happens to the WCA, where does the $10 go? Most people agreed that dropping the extra $10 from the dues printed in the constitution would save us time in the future. We can always amend it later or have internal collections for the $10. Might be a good idea to contribute initial dues collection (for 2008-2009 school year) to the publishing costs of the WCA. Need to discuss this at a later time.
Generally, everyone is ready to go forward with the RSO. Shanna reminded everyone that in order to be an officer, the individual must be an active member (which means dues need to have been paid). Elections for officers for the 2008-2009 school year will be held at the next meeting.
WEB PAGE Joe Gingrich had brought to everyone’s attention that the graduate student webpage had not been updated in two years. It is necessary for new students to be added and graduated students to be removed. Liz Lynch, Christy Montgomery, Joe Gingrich, and Patrick Mullen volunteered to take over figuring out how to get the web page up and running again.
GRADUATE STUDENT DATA STORAGE Shanna Cox suggested that it might be useful to start collecting electronic/paper materials that represent the student body and that all graduate students have access to. This would include teaching materials.
MEETING WITH NICOLE Shanna and Meg will be going to meet with Nicole, our new graduate studies chair, and wanted to take a list of concerns from the graduate students from her. Following is that incredibly long, terrible list…
GA expectations Hours What happens when you go over hours? More pay? Quit early? Problem resolution/GA abuse
FOR HANDBOOK Clarify graduate transfer credit Guidelines for program of study “ideal’ timeline – what is it? How can it vary? Funding opportunities (NSF, Departmental, etc) AGSC Info PhD Portfolio (what the heck goes in it) Committee Meetings Optional Fee Package Foreign language requirements How to establish residency
For Oral Exams (Masters) Can there be random faculty sign up for orals (meaning can student names be removed so they cannot be considered by faculty who are signing up) Need to clarify ‘fail’ procedures. Is it just a paper? Does there have to be another exam?
GA Funding Requirements What allows funding? How does funding get revoked? Is there a checklist people should know about who are interested in a GA position? Also – when do we learn if we are teaching or not (GA or non-GA)?
Allocation of Space Who does it? What is considered? Can we request a space if one is not assigned to us? What are our options if no space is allotted to us?
