More than 50 percent of funding for the AHC comes from private support—annual fund donations, endowment income, and (least) fees for service. In fact, private funds support 100% of our non-personnel expenses and 50% of our faculty and staff positions. We could not function, much less achieve outstanding results, without private gifts.
Gifts of all sizes are greatly valued and have an enormous impact on the work we do! When an attorney writes to us:
Thanks so much for all of the consideration given us by … every person we met associated with the American Heritage Center. We are all over the country [doing research] and I can tell you that U of W American Heritage Ctr. is at the top of the list.
It is our donors who deserve the accolades as much as our renowned reference archivists, for without your philanthropy we would not have such a remarkable staff.
Our donors make it possible for us to give internationally-recognized assistance to students both at the university and public school levels in using primary sources, provide a wide array of free public programs and free access to our reading rooms, maintain a robust traveling exhibits program viewed by 40-50,000 people each year, digitize more than 100,000 items from our collection material for direct access on the web, and more.
Unrestricted annual fund gifts are critical to helping the AHC meet its daily needs by providing a dependable source of flexible funding for its many programs. Additionally, private philanthropy make resources available when there is a sudden requirement or a sudden opportunity (for example, to purchase important historical documents). Endowment gift income supports professional positions and entire programs, such as History Day.
