Graduate Admissions

Applying for graduate study in the American Studies program is a two-step process. Applicants must apply both directly to the American Studies program and to the University of Wyoming for graduate study.

The Application materials for inner-department review and admission decisions must be sent directly to the American Studies program and include:

  • Three letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be sent by professionals who are capable of judging your academic work and your qualification to pursue graduate studies. Usually, letters of recommendation are written by undergraduate faculty familiar with an applicant's skills and qualities. While other types of recommenders from professional work environments may be acceptable, personal relationships do not constitute a professional relationship. Letters need to be sent directly from the recommenders to the department.
  • A statement of purpose
The statement of purpose should in 1-2 pages express the applicant's qualification for pursuing the master's program in American Studies, research interests and career goals and why they want to pursue them at the University of Wyoming. This statement is of crucial importance as it not only determines how well an applicant fits into our program, but also their capability of academic writing.
  • A writing sample up to 10 pages in length
The writing sample is preferably an essential and progressed piece of academic writing from your undergraduate degree and demonstrates a students capability of academic research and writing.
  • Unofficial copy(ies) of transcripts from all previous academic institutions
If formally admitted, you will need to provide official transcripts to the University of Wyoming.

  • A sheet of current contact information, including preferred email address, phone number and current mailing address

As of the application cycle 2020 the department no longer requires the GRE for admission and no longer considers it for admission decisions.

The Program has a rolling admissions policy but considers students for financial aid, including Graduate Assistantships, once per year.  The suggested deadline for students applying for financial aid is March 15th.
