Wool Judging

Sharpen Your Skills. Compete with Excellence. Represent UW.

Participants learn principles of wool fiber evaluation through the inter-collegiate wool judging format. Additionally, students learn principles of fiber metrology, objective measurement of wool, quality characteristics, and how the quality of the raw fleece influences finished-product development. Team members are required to enroll in the wool judging class (1 credit). They are expected to practice twice weekly during the fall semester, with greater frequency the week before the National Western Inter-Collegiate Wool Judging Competition, generally the second week in January. Team members also have the opportunity to work with WY 4-H and FFA wool judging teams, assisting in clinics and invitational contests on campus.

7220 Wool Judging Invitational

The 7220 Wool Judging Invitational, hosted by the University of Wyoming Sheep Program, brings together collegiate and youth competitors from across the region to showcase their skills in the art and science of wool evaluation. Participants test their abilities through a variety of classes, including breed and commercial fleece judging, grading rails, and value-based evaluation. Unique to this contest are live animal assessment opportunities, such as performance Rambouillet rams and replacement ewe lambs, giving contestants hands-on experience that mirrors real-world industry practices. The event fosters competition, learning, and connection among future leaders of the sheep and wool industry.
