The Art Museum has several special collections. This includes the Huey G. and Phyllis T. Shelton Collection, which is comprised entirely of the work of Ichiro, the largest single-artist netsuke collection in the U.S. The ukiyo-e collection of approximately 75 Japanese wood block prints has representations of all of the major artists of the genre including Utagawa (Ichiyusai) Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai. The Persian miniature paintings from Persia/Iran and Indian (Mughal) miniatures from the period of Islamic rule in part of Indian and Pakistan relate to the area’s mythology, legends and poetry. A selection of 38 paintings by 20th century Haitian artists are represented through a rich and colorful mix of allegory and myth with artists such Edouard Duval-Carrie and Alexandre Gregoire.
