From the Scottish Sublime to the American West: Selected Works from the University of Wyoming

April 9 – July 9, 2011

From the Scottish Sublime to the American West: Selected Works from the University of Wyoming explores the relationship between the romantic sublime landscapes of the British artists of the 18th and 19th centuries and the early American landscape tradition of the 19th century.

British artists examined the landscape through color and light, creating images in which untamed nature becomes an aesthetic experience, similar to the Romanticism movement occurring in literature and the arts. The American artists drew upon these grand romantic images, first with the plays of light and color of the Hudson River School artists, and later the magnificent landscapes of the American West that embodied the notion of Manifest Destiny.

  • From the Scottish Sublime to the American West has been organized by the UW Art Museum in conjunction with the The Ninth International Scott Conference, Walter Scott: Sheriff and Outlaw, scheduled at the University of Wyoming from July 5 – 9, 2011. Funded in part by the National Advisory Board of the UW Art Museum
