ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT

Our team of curators and educators specialize in making the world come alive through art and objects. This interdisciplinary way of teaching and learning is what we call Museum as Classroom and is not specific to any one discipline, but rather a way to synthesize and analyze the world around us through deep looking and discussions about objects.

University of Wyoming Class Visits

University of Wyoming Art Museum offers a variety of options for university faculty and instructors from all academic disciplines to engage with our collection. A customized class session in the museum is a great way to integrate active learning strategies into the student educational experience.

Whether you want to have one class session in the galleries or are interested in a semester-long partnership, we have options to fit your time commitment needs. In all options below, faculty and instructors are expected to attend the museum class session(s) with their students.  For more information on any of these options or request a meeting to brainstorm ideas, please e-mail Raechel Cook.

Guided Viewing of Current Exhibitions

Level of time commitment: Low

Work with the Curator of Academic Engagement to build a class session that connects your course learning objectives and themes with works of art currently on display. Students will engage with works of art through close looking and making connections between the art and their coursework.

Studio Experience

Level of time commitment: Low-Medium

One unique feature of the UW Art Museum is our studio space, which provides a place for students to make their own artistic creations and actively explore ideas they are learning in class. A guided studio session can also be added as a follow-up class session after the initial gallery visit.

Resource Room Visit

Level of time commitment: Medium

Work in partnership with the Curator of Academic Engagement and Collections Manager to build a class session that connects your course learning objectives and themes with art from the permanent collection not currently on view. The requested works of art will be accessible in the Resource Room during the scheduled class visit.

Pat Guthrie Teaching Gallery

Level of time commitment: High

Each semester, up to four faculty from any academic discipline may request to use a wall in the teaching gallery and select artwork from our permanent collection that is specific to their course content. Teaching gallery exhibitions remain on view for the duration of the semester. The teaching gallery is intended for classes that will require students to visit the museum multiple times throughout the semester and complete an assignment that incorporates themes, ideas, and content related to the works on view. Exhibitions planning for the teaching gallery begins a minimum of one semester in advance.

Community College Visits

Our curators love to provide teaching and learning opportunities to neighboring community colleges, including those from Colorado and Nebraska. Visits to the museum are tailored to fit your needs and can be anything from close looking exercises in the galleries, to art-making in the studios and even behind-the-scenes collection tours. If you’re interested in an educational visit, please contact Raechel Cook.
