David R. Nicholas* -- 2009 Outstanding Alumnus
Juris Doctorate degree in 1966
Described as a Renaissance man, David R. Nicholas earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1966.
While practicing law in Laramie, Nicholas served the university in a variety of capacities: teacher for a variety of courses, advisor, and advocate. Nicholas was on several UW boards, including the College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors. One of the founding members of the International Board of Advisors, Nicholas was a dedicated member who worked to provide support and raise funds for international programs at UW. He later received the board’s annual award for outstanding achievement in the international arena.
Nicholas served in Brussels as the Department of Defense’s Advisor to the U.S. Mission to NATO. When he left NATO in 1993, Nicholas began collaborations with UW and Saratov State University in Russia, the Saratov Provincial and City governments, and Rotary International 5440 of Wyoming and Northern Colorado. Nicholas later established a Rotary Club in Saratov.
In 2002, Nicholas accepted a position with the Department of State and became a representative to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, stationed in Vienna, before becoming the OSCE Ambassador to Ukraine.
Nicholas died in 2005 while in Ukraine. His wife, Karen, comments, “Although the pursuit of democracy and rule of law were vitally important to Dave, I think if he were here and asked to list his accomplishments, he would emphasize his work for UW when he was in the Wyoming State Senate in the 1980s.”
*In loving memory.
