Department of Botany

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Botany at University of Wyoming

Just as we work to better understand and protect the biodiversity of the systems we study, one of the Botany Department’s core values is to support and strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workplace and the community of people we bring together in scholarship. We acknowledge that implicit biases can impact all our judgements, decisions, and behaviors with significant repercussions for individuals from marginalized backgrounds. To combat these biases, we are working to actively promote anti-racism and inclusivity in our research and education. We acknowledge this is an ongoing journey of continual growth and learning and our department is committed to progressing on this journey together.

We emphasize our commitment to recruit and support community members from all backgrounds and identities, including but not limited to race, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religion. Ensuring all members of our community can work and learn in a safe environment is fundamentally an issue of equity and inclusion.

Land acknowledgment

We acknowledge that we reside within the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux), Tséstho’e (Cheyenne), Apsáalooke (Crow), Gweechoon Deka (Eastern Shoshone) and Hinono’eino’ biito’owu’ (Arapaho) peoples. We reflect on 500+ years of history and what that has meant for Indigenous peoples. This history is filled with genocide, loss, and assimilation attempts that cannot be ignored. Despite all this, we celebrate the diverse cultures that continue to enrich Wyoming today, including Arapaho people, Shoshone people, and residents of the Wind River Reservation. The Botany Department recognizes transgressions against indigenous peoples that continue to this day, including the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women and LGBTQ2+ people. We commit ourselves to incorporating justice, truth, and reconciliation in our research and education activities, including direct collaborations with indigenous stakeholders in Wyoming, continued learning in the department through organized reading groups and discussions, and encouraging inclusive pedagogy in all department courses.
