College of Business

The ETS Exam at the College of Business

The College of Business at UW requires an "exit exam" to make certain our students have learned the material necessary to understand business.  The exam that is used is the Business Exam provided by The Educational Testing Service (ETS).  Using such an exam ensures the faculty and employers that the students have learned what is necessary and assures students that they have been exposed to nationally relevant and appropriate material during their education at UW.  It provides external validation of quality for all concerned.

The ETS exam is required of all students who wish to graduate with a degree in a business related major from the University of Wyoming.  It is administered during the semester when students take the "capstone course" (Business Strategy), because by then they have completed all other relevant coursework.  Students cannot graduate until they have passed the ETS exam.

The exam format is multiple choice and the test covers the following areas: Accounting, Economics, Management, Quantitative Business Analysis, Information Systems, Finance, Marketing, Legal and Social Environment, and International Issues.  The test is taken online at a pre-arranged time and your score will be available when the exam is completed.  No calculators are allowed but you can use scratch paper and a pencil.  There are 120 questions on the exam.  The maximum score available is 200.  To pass the exam you must score 150.  This score is subject to review and change by the faculty.

Some students find reviewing their business class materials useful before the exam.  The college suggests reviewing your class notes and textbooks.  If you do not still have your texts, a small library of texts in each area is available in the Management and Marketing office.  However, there is no guarantee that the book you used will be there - simply books that we have found generally cover the material.  Further, links to additional review materials are attached to this website to help your study.  We do not know exactly what will be asked on the exam, but the links provide a good review for you of the basics in each area.

UW College of Business students generally do well on the test with most passing the first time.  However, some students do not pass the ETS exam.  If you fail, you must take a diagnostic test at a later time.  This test will identify in which subject areas you are weak.  You will be given a week to study those areas again and will be retested on those areas only.  If you pass, all is well - if you fail again you may be required to take a course in the weak area to get your knowledge up to standard.  That decision will be made by the Department Chairperson in your department.

What is the ETS?

This exam is designed to measure the basic knowledge and understanding achieved by senior undergraduates in their major field of study.  Our scores are compared to other accredited institutions of comparable size, allowing employers nationwide to see that our students are getting a quality education.

Why do we have to take the ETS?

The data helps the instructors in the college by making sure they are teaching relevant topics to allow our students to succeed in the business world.  It provides external validation of a student's education for all concerned.

Where do I take the exam?

On-campus students

On-campus students will take the exam, as a group, in computers labs around campus.

Online students

An email will be sent with a list of proctors (for students within Wyoming).  You need to contact the person and make arrangements to go to their office and take the exam.   If you are outside of the state, it is your responsibility to find a proctor and have them contact us to get the information necessary to sign in for the exam.  You can contact a library, community college, school district or government office.  They need to be nearby during the exam, first to log you in and then to be available in case you get bumped out (rare!).

What format can I expect on this exam?

The exam is a multiple choice, online exam.  You are allowed a pencil and piece of paper but no calculator.  You have 2 hours to complete the exam.

Is it true that I get 120 points just for signing my name and only need 145 to pass?

No!  We don't know exactly how the exam is scored but we do know this is not the case.  You need to make an effort to review the provided material and take the exam seriously.

How do I know if I passed?

Your grade will be available as soon as you complete the exam - the proctor can look it up for you before you leave.  The College of Business currently requires a passing score of 150 (out of 200) in order to graduate.

Can I predict the outcome of the exam after I take it?

No!  Students who think they've bombed it often do well, and vice versa.  Again, review and take it seriously!

What happens if I don't pass?

Each semester, a small percentage of students do not pass the first time.  Those who do not pass are given a diagnostic written exam, an opportunity to study weak areas and then a retest over those weak areas. Upon receiving of a passing grade, you will be allowed to proceed.  Should you not pass the second exam, you may be required to take another course in the area of weakness.

How do I prepare for this exam?

To assist you further, a website has been set up which has information regarding the ETS areas and topic contents. You will also find a variety of study tools - handouts, power points and sample test questions.  You can also check out various textbooks from the Management and Marketing office library.  We recommend you review your class notes and exams.
