Sherif Gaweesh, a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Wyoming's College of Engineering and Applied Science, received an award for his work in transportation research.

Gaweesh was named as the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Colorado/Wyoming Section Student of the Year, the first time the award has been given. He was presented his award at a UW ITE student chapter meeting on April 16. As the winner of the honor, he received a plaque, $500, and a stipend to attend the 2018 ITE Joint Western and Texas District Annual Meeting in Keystone, Colo., in June.

He was nominated by UW Assistant Professor Milan Zlatkovic.

"He is highly respected by all of his colleagues at the university and beyond," Civil and Architectural Engineering Assistant Professor and UW ITE student chapter faculty advisor Mohamed Ahmed says. "Sherif’s presence will be missed once he graduates, but the foundation he has built will help the student chapter to thrive."

Gaweesh's research involves connected vehicles, intelligent transportation systems and roadway safety, and he is currently involved in at least five research projects related to these topics. He is one of the leaders of the UW driving simulator lab (WYOSIM) and developed and designed several driving simulator experiments.

Gaweesh serves as the president of the UW ITE student chapter, and he has planned meetings and activities throughout the year. Several members of the chapter attended the 15th annual ITE Spring Transportation Symposium in Denver in April. He also is the vice president of the Islamic Center of Laramie.

"His work on these issues is at the forefront of developments in transportation engineering and will bring real change to the industry," Ahmed adds.
