Attendees of the CEAS New Student Convocation were introduced to the college's faculty, staff and programs Tuesday.

On Tuesday, as a large group of incoming students looked on, College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Associate Dean Steve Barrett kicked off the fall 2018 semester.

The anticipation for the University of Wyoming academic year was evident. The line to attend the CEAS New Student Convocation stretched into Lewis Street as students filed into the Enzi STEM Facility. From there, attendees sat at tables and couches and filled the Enzi Atrium.

The convocation serves as a way to welcome first-time freshmen and transfers to campus. The newcomers listened to presentations from faculty and staff, and browsed tables at the resource fair with professional societies and organizations. Later in the event, college ambassadors guided discussions with the students about things such as crisis counseling, professional courtesy and conduct, engineering societies, academic resources, study abroad, academic dishonesty and career services. The small group discussions helped encourage dialogue, and some lucky attendees were awarded raffle prizes throughout the event.

“The New Student Convocation is very valuable, as it gives the college the opportunity to make sure all of our newest students get some very specific and important information,” CEAS Academic Advising Manager Laurie Bonini says.

“While we see most of these students at new student orientation, they’re not ready to hear many of the messages, as they’re focused on just getting registered for classes. At the convocation, we stress the many resources and opportunities that UW can offer them, and introduce them to faculty and staff that they’re likely to encounter in their first year. This is where we officially welcome our newest students to the college, and let them know that they’re part of a very unique and special organization. The faculty, staff, and peer mentors also enjoy the opportunity to get to know some of our new students.”

The fall 2018 semester officially begins Wednesday as UW students begin attending class.
