Petroleum Engineering Student Wins International Honor

University of Wyoming Ph.D. candidate Vahideh Mirchi won first place in the international student paper contest competition at an annual Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) event.
Mirchi, who studies petroleum engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, won the SPE student paper competition for the Rocky Mountain region. That win led to a sponsored trip to SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), which took place Sept. 24-26 in Dallas. More than 8,000 gathered at the ATCE for three days of learning, networking, and collaborating on the collective goals of the industry.
On the strength of her regional win, Mirchi was invited to participate in the final SPE contest. She submitted her winning entry and presented it in competition. It is the first time that a student from UW has won the award, and Mirchi beat out competitors from 14 world regions.
