UW’s Partnerships Boost Engineers Week

The annual Engineers Week event reached a record number of Wyoming students, thanks to the efforts of the University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) and other program partners.
CEAS K-12 Outreach Coordinator Teddi Freedman served as the campus lead for the event. The Wyoming State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors led promotional efforts, and Union Wireless was a valuable sponsor. The fourth annual Engineers Week program, which took place Feb. 18-22, brought professional engineers into Wyoming’s third-grade classrooms to lead a one-hour hands-on activity. The goal was to inspire innovative thinking among students to encourage participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
“The CEAS would like to extend a huge ‘Thank You’ to Union Wireless for its generous support of the 2019 Engineers Week program,” Freedman says. “We would also like to thank all of our program participants, including teachers, professional engineers and our third-grade students across the state.”
Freedman received positive feedback from teachers involved in the program, who shared stories of students who were excited about engineering and STEM. Participation in the program was at an all-time high, featuring 130 engineers and 3,636 students in 198 classrooms. The student numbers were up more than 300 students over last year.
“We are grateful to collaborate with so many different groups in our state to inspire the next generation of engineers,” Freedman says. “We look forward to engaging everyone again in 2020.”
