Visiting Scholar Offers Insights Into Computer Science and Math

Ursula Martin, a world-renowned computer scientist and mathematician, will offer a series of lectures and presentations to the University of Wyoming community in April.
Martin will be on campus April 2-5. Several UW entities will sponsor the visit, including the College of Engineering and Applied Science, Department of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Office of Research and Economic Development and the Honors College.
Hailing from the United Kingdom, Martin is an acclaimed computer scientist, mathematician and author. She is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering,a professor at the University of Edinburgh and a senior research fellow at the University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute.
She also co-authored a book, "Ada Lovelace: The Making of a Computer Scientist." Despite the expectations that limited educational opportunities for women in her era, Lovelace has been called the world’s first computer programmer, and has become an icon for women in technology today.
As part of her UW visit, Martin will offer a question-and-answer session with the Math Club, have lunch with women in STEM students and offer a lecture for the Department of Mathematics, and a meet-and-greet breakfast with UW Honors and research scholar students.
The Laramie community will have an opportunity to interact with Martin during a public talk, titled "Ada Lovelace-A Pioneering Computer Scientist in Her Social Context." It will be 4-5 p.m. April 3 in the Berry Center Auditorium, followed by a reception.
Those who want more information can view the event flyer, while the presentation also will be simulcast on WyoCast.
