My research over the years has focused on the behavioral and institutional underpinnings of economic policy, usually for environmental and natural resource issues. I have worked, for example, on the economics of endangered species, invasive species, climate change, COVID-19, nonmarket valuation, institutional and mechanism design, and experimental economics. My research explores success and failure in markets, coordination, governance, and behavior; how people choose to protect themselves from risk, how conflict emerge and the scope for coordination, how bargaining and cooperation works, how to design incentives to better match private and social values, assessing the value of reduced risks to life and limb for humans and ecosystems, and the general question of economic prosperity. Today I am working on the power of the oath to create real-economic commitment without markets.
