7a Body length usually much less than 45 mm (1 3/4 inches); when 45 mm, the insect is slender with well developed tegmina. Subfamily GOMPHOCERINAE (go to 9)

7b Exceedingly large and robust species, body length 45 mm and over. Tegmina reduced to pads. Subfamily ROMALEINAE.
