Education Abroad Celebrates Accepts 12 Students to Scholarship Cohort

The Cheney First Abroad Planning Scholarship is an undergraduate scholarship program for first-generation students of limited financial means to enable them to study or intern abroad. The program provides awards up to $5,000 for students who are:

  • First-generation college students (neither parent has completed a 4-year college degree); and
  • First-year status (students who have not yet completed 30 credit hours at UW)

Receiving this scholarship will help students ensure funding for future education abroad experiences, learn about the benefits of studying abroad, and plan to fit this experience into degree plans.

Departments, Schools, Colleges Honor Students

The Honors College hosted a recognition lunch for honors students who are first in their families to attend college. Students in the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources who are first in their families to attend college were given Dining Dollars to purchase a coffee or snack of their choosing.

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources recognized First-Generation Students by inviting them to pick up a snack from their Academic Advising Office.

Webinar Series and Virtual Celebrations

Faculty, staff, and students attended webinars centering on the first-generation experience to help UW better align our institutional resources and offer support to meet the unique needs of first-gen students. A lunch and learn virtual panel took place Nov. 9th. It provided a foundation of information and inspiration that prompted larger conversations. A virtual celebration of first-generation college students was held later that day with a live DJ, chances to win gift cards, and more. Check out the #FirstGenVillage Social Media Challenge.
