The definitions for the rates above and the process for debiting fringe benefits accounts for Workers' Compensation are as follows:
WC1 Clerical Rate X *gross salary, applies to support staff of institutions of learning who typically work in an office environment, whose duties do not include performing in a scientific laboratory environment.
WC2 Professional (without lab) Rate: X *gross salary, applies to professional faculty, administrators, and support personnel of institutions of learning whose duties do not include performing in a scientific laboratory environment.
WC3 Professional (with lab involvement) Rate: X *gross salary, applies to professional faculty, administrators, and support personnel of institutions of learning whose duties include performing in a scientific laboratory environment.
WC4 Non-Professional Rate: X *gross salary, applies to employees engaged in the care, custody and maintenance of university, college or school buildings, grounds and equipment; this rate also applies to safety and security personnel of the institution and any other personnel engaged in activities not defined as Professional (with lab involvement), Professional (without lab involvement) or Clerical.
All non-benefited employees, including students, should be placed in the appropriate rate instead of the "Clerical" rate. For example, if you have a student working in a lab, they will be placed in the "Professional with lab" category. Graduate Assistants will be placed in either the "Professional" or "Professional with lab" because their duties include either teaching or researching in a lab setting.
*Gross salary includes base pay, overtime pay, bonus pay, etc.
For employees paid from Section II funds, the monthly amount for Workers' Comp will be charged to the employee's fringe account that is associated with the account that they are paid from. Units and departments preparing budgets for grant submission should include the appropriate workers' comp rate into applications that will fund salaries. These costs must be included in future budgets. Section I employees will continue to have Workers' Comp paid from EPBs (Employer Paid Benefits).
