Math Placement Testing......WHY?
How Important is it?
Should I Study?
What's the"BIG DEAL" all about, Anyway?
Almost all students entering the University of Wyoming as a freshman or sophomore will be required to take mathematics courses as part of their graduation requirements.
Many degree fields within the university require specific levels of mathematics knowledge prior to allowing enrollment in the program or require specific mathematics courses as part of their degree requirements.
The University has a set mathematics requirement as part of the University Studies Program (USP).
It is necessary to determine each students math skill level in order to place the student in the appropriate level math course to ensure their academic success. To accomplish this we utilize a variety of tools both before the student arrives on campus such as ACT, SAT or GRE scores, eligible transfer credits from other colleges, universities or AP programs and once the student arrives using our own online placement exam or one of the proctored exams such as Accuplacer or Compass.
All UW mathematics courses have carefully stated prerequisites and the Department of Mathematics considers adherence to these prerequisites essential in assuring that each student has the best possible opportunity for academic success. These prerequisites are part of each course description and can be found in the course catalog or in the Math Placement Information brochure.
To assist each student in understanding prerequisites and math placement we developed the Math Placement & Prerequisite Guide. This is a comprehensive guide to walk you and your advisor through the the process of determining your math prerequisites and how to improve your math placement score. This guide contains contact information and many of the frequently asked questions related to your score and placement. In addition to the guide we also provide many tested study materials and resources to help you get the best possible score.
