MPE Common testing issues

Avoid the Frustration

Before you take the assessment, here are our tips and tricks for some common test taking frustrations.

The MPE must be proctored for the score to be valid. See the proctoring page for proctoring options.

If you are taking the assessment online and Honorlock does not launch or you are being asked for a password, then proctoring was not enabled correctly.  See the FAQ page for troubleshooting steps.

The math placement exam is trying to figure out where your math knowledge is right now.

It is going to try to give you questions you do NOT know how to answer on purpose!  It is trying to find the line of what you do and do not know so it can place you in the best class for your current knowledge level.  Unless you have already taken all the classes the assessment tests you should not be able to answer all the questions.

If you have no idea how to start a question, click the "I don't know" option.  Otherwise, just try your best!

When the calculator is available for a question on the MPE, the calculator button will show up in the upper right corner of your screen.

The calculator is not available for every question.

The questions where a calculator is not provided are doing so because using a calculator would hide the concept that the question is trying to see if you know.  For example, an order of operations question will not tell us if you know order of operations if you could just put it into a calculator.  We appreciate you taking the time to complete the calculations by hand so we can place you in the class that gives you the best chance for success.

Leaving the testing room for any reason can invalidate your score, so please complete everything you need to before you start the first question.

If for some reason you need to leave the testing area during the assessment, please vocalize why you need to leave and do a quick room scan before you begin the assessment again.

ALEKS PPL will give you an unvalidated raw score when you finish the assessment, but they have no information about if proctoring was successful.

Honorlock provide the Math Placement staff with recordings and information about the session, but they do not validate your score.

Honorlock will not always tell you that you are violating a guideline while you are taking the exam. They may pop in to ask a question or request a change to ensure a good test taking environment but they will NEVER stop you session or invalidate your score.

If one of the guidelines is found violated in the review of your exam your score will not be loaded [and you may need to retake the exam in person].  Only in-person proctoring will guarantee that your score is valid upon completion of the assessment.

Technical glitches are something we see often and can invalidate your score.  Here are some of our tips and tricks:

  • Be sure you are in a location with good internet.  Loss of video may invalidate your score.
  • If you get kicked out of the assessment, get back in ASAP.  But don't leave the session intentionally.
  • Be sure your audio is recording. If your microphone is coming through a headset, is disabled, or has another issue the attempt may be invalidated.
  • If in doubt, check with Honorlock support by clicking the chat bubble in the bottom right of your screen during the assessment.
  • Save any chats with Honorlock support.
  • If you accidentally click to a different tab/screen, just click back as soon as possible.

If you are taking the assessment with Honorlock be sure you show your workspace during the roomscan.

We also highly recommend you place your computer back a ways so we can see your scratchwork/hands in the recording while you work.  Seeing your workspace is the easiest way for us to clarify any concerns over a policy violation.

If you are taking the assessment with an in-person proctor, they will maintain a space that is sufficient for testing.

If you are taking the assessment online and someone can enter the testing space without opening a door, the space is not good for testing.  Do not take your assessment in a public house space (such as a living room) or an open public space (such as a library).

If you do not have an appropriate space to take the assessment online and cannot do proctoring in person, we recommend you look into reservable spaces.  Many community libraries and the University library have rooms you can reserve.

ANY instance of Apple Handoff, the presence of Chrome Hub, or the indication of any bluetooth enable devices (phone, smartwatch, headphones, etc.) can result in your score not being loaded. Turn off bluetooth on your device and remove these devices from the testing area before you begin.

One of the most common flags we see is for phones in the testing area.  Please just leave it out of the room.

We have to review each Math Placement attempt one by one to ensure compliance with the policies before we can load the score.  We work as quickly as we can, but it can take up to 3 business days for us to get to the review.  If you do not see your score loaded into WyoRecords or receive an email within 3 business days, you can inquire about your score at math-registration@uwyo.edu.

If you DO get assistance of any sort and get past our review, you are only hurting yourself.

If you end up in a class above your actual knowledge level, you will be responsible for learning any prerequisite material at the same time as the course material.  The instructor works on the assumption that you have knowledge from any prerequisite course when you register for the course.  They are not responsible for helping you fill an any gaps in knowledge.
