Mission Statement

The teacher-student relationship is one that is held in the highest regard. The University of Wyoming voice faculty will guide the student to develop the voice in a manner that is pedagogically sound, sets high standards for the outcome of performance, promotes the development of healthy technique and good practice habits.

The student will learn to use the voice in service of a great artistic tradition, toward promotion of community, and to use vocal music as a vehicle for expression and communication. In the classroom, gleaned knowledge will educate young singers and promote satisfying choral and soloistic opportunities. Student colleagues will be supportive of each other in their vocal pursuits, recognizing that each instrument and experience is unique. Healthy competition through state and regional competitions will help measure their talents and expose them to their peers within the region.

The UW vocal education will provide performance opportunities through studio classes, joint and solo recitals, Convocation performances, and choral ensembles. Additionally, the student will enjoy exposure to established vocal talent in the form of master teachers and internationally recognized performers brought to campus for recitals and master classes.

Guest Artists and Masterclasses

UW Presents brings world-renowned guest artists and ensembles to our campus. Past artists have included Marilyn Horne, Martin Katz, Elly Ameling, Heidi Grant Murphy, The King Singers, The Swingle Singers, and The Real Group.

Vocal Scholarship Information

Support is available for Vocal Arts students through ample scholarship opportunities. Priority for vocal scholarships is given to students who declare a music major. Exceptions are given to non-majors who display exceptional talent or if there is an ensemble need. Scholarship awards may be up to full tuition and lesson fees.

Scholarship recipients are expected to perform in two designated music department ensembles every semester, and must enroll in private vocal instruction.

Audition Requirements

For your audition, you must perform two pieces from memory; both may be in English. Please choose a repertoire that displays your current abilities. Sight singing, ear training, rhythm, and musicianship skills will also be assessed at the conclusion of the audition.

An accompanist will be provided for the audition. Once an audition date and time have been assigned, you will be contacted regarding a rehearsal time with your accompanist.

In lieu of a live audition, a high-quality CD, DVD or a secure, web-based recording may be submitted for consideration (video is preferred).
